True Sickle Cell Warrior - Adeja Johnson

In tribute to Adeja Johnson during Sickle Cell Awareness Month 2011.

A warrior is a person engaged or experienced in warfare or figuratively a person who shows or has shown great vigor, courage, or aggressiveness.

Adeja Johnson is one such person. She was a true sickle cell warrior.

Adeja fought sickle cell disease with the newly discovered procedure, Stem Cell Transplant. There are many complications of this treatment and the long-term effects are not fully known. Even with this procedure, there is still no "reliable" cure.

But Adeja and her family stood out in front of this battle with courage AND aggressiveness. As only a warrior would do, Adeja fought well and we are all better off because she did.

God bless you Adeja, I'll be looking for you in heaven.

  1. As a 70-year-od with type 1 (autoimmune) diabetes, it sounds like very much the same thing diabetics to through. When a treatment (as opposed to an actual cure) is found for a childhood disease, it takes quite a while for the medical establishment to wake up to the fact that when you treat children, eventually you have adults and even elderly patients who still need treatment. In our case it's complicated by the fact that most people (including those in the medical community) don't know the difference between type 1 diabetes (autoimmune and fatal before insulin was discovered) and the far commoner type 2 diabetes, often treatable by lifestyle changes and to some extent a lifestyle disease.

  2. Kudos to Adeja and her family. Also to Sue Ann who is fighting the good fight with type 1 diabetes. Congratulations to you for bringing this to our attention.

What a great blog and wonderful to acknowledge those who have helped further knowledge in this area.

Love the fighting spirit of those who refuse to accept the statistics and prove that with appropriate care and belief, sickle cell shouldn't stop you from living the life you dream of.

  4. Martin Luther King said,"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." I live....by this.

Thanks for following my blogs on living with Sickle Cell Disease.
