June 19th - Sickle Cell Disease World Day at UN

The United Nations (UN) celebrates the first annual Sickle Cell Disease World Day at the UN in New York.

I can't help being happy, excited and overjoyed. The United Nations General Assembly approved a Resolution proposed by the delegation from the Republic of Congo Brazzaville and co-sponsored by 24 Member States.

June 19th of each year was established as Sickle Cell World Day at the UN.

This years activities include: Testimony Stand exhibitions by patients' organizations and international organizations, an art exhibition on the disease, panel and round table discussions, a First Ladies and Royal Highnesses meeting, and a gala dinner.

In partnership with UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN, this Sickle Cell Disease World Day event will bring global awareness to Sickle Cell Disease and its growing public health problem.

If you're in the New York area (or can get there by plane, train or automobile), please get more information and support this worthy event.

This is a great day! I am delighted and relieved that we can finally be heard. My daughter has suffered from the ravages of this disease for 11 years. I am blessed that she is still with us and I continue to be optimistic and prayerful that she will be cured.

  2. This is the whole point, patients voices being heard. Thank you for being optimistic for your daughter, she needs that. When people around us keep hope alive, we (people who suffer) will too. Cures are very close...with gene therapy. God bless.

Finally sickle cell anemia is coming out of the dark to light. We will mark this day on 19th June at Kawanda Namalere with a press conference, exhibition and testimonies. Special thanks go to UN,WHO & UNICEF.I believe we will one day get a cure for the disease that is more accessible & affordable than born marrow transplant. HAPPY WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY.

  5. Ruth, I love what you said, "Finally, sickle cell anemia is coming out of the dark to light."

This was (is) my hope with this blog. The more we educate, the less ignorance there is about this disease.

What I discovered is people all over the world suffer with sickle cell disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified sickle cell disease in Asia, India, Africa, Europe, and in North & South America.

We are shining the light all over the world. Good work Ruth educating people in Uganda!!!!
